Joe Mills

“I’ve been in the industry cutting mens hair for 40 years. Originally I started down in Margate at 16 as an apprentice where I learnt all aspects of hairdressing but fell in love with men’s hair quite quickly. By the time I was 20, I moved to London and was fortunate to work in Soho at a salon called Fish where I worked with them for 9 years. In 1998, I left and opened up my first salon called the Lounge Soho which was one of the first boutique salons in Central London. I then also opened up Joe & Co barbers in Soho which was an award winning barbershop. 22 months ago, we decided to close it all down and opened a new brand called Woolf Kings X. We have just over 40 staff working here and we’re fully booked all the time. It’s an amazing hub in the centre of Kings Cross.

I specialise in session work and men’s grooming. I do a lot of front covers of all the big magazines as well as doing a lot of red carpets, press work and also a lot of ad campaigns with celebrities and well-known actors. I’m very fortunate I get to travel and work with a lot of great people. The work I do is quite organic and I tend to work a lot with the hair that I’ve got. Often the people I work with aren’t allowed to have dramatic changes because of what they’re working on, so I’m forced to be able to try and make something out of a restriction. My speciality is definitely softer, longer length hair although I do do a lot of clipper work and very clean clipper work. I also do education around men’s hair as well as mentoring about how to get into session work and teaching men’s skin”.
