Joe Mills
Joe Mills has been cutting men’s hair for 40 years and is one of London’s most experienced men’s hairdressers and session stylists.
Joe began his career at 16 an an apprentice in Margate, where he trained across all aspects of hairdressing before quickly finding his passion for men’s hair. At 20 he moved to London and joined the renowned Soho salon Fish, spending nine years there before opening his first salon, The Lounge Soho, in 1998 - one of the early independent boutique salons in central London.
He later founded Joe & Co, the award-winning Soho barbershop, before bringing his experience in hairdressing, barbering and session work together to create Woolf Kings X.
Based in the heart of King’s Cross, London, Woolf has grown into a busy creative hub with a team of more than 40 hairdressers, barbers and creatives.
Alongside his work at Woolf, Joe has built a long career as a session stylist specialising in men’s hair and grooming. His work includes magazine covers and editorial shoots, red-carpet and press appearances, advertising campaigns and grooming for leading actors, celebrities and public figures in the UK and internationally.
Joe’s approach to men’s hair is deliberately natural and individual. Much of his session work involves actors and performers who cannot dramatically change their hair because of filming or other commitments. Rather than imposing a haircut, he works with the existing length, texture, movement and character of the hair to find something that feels right for the person.
He is particularly known for softer, longer men’s hairstyles and natural, lived-in finishes, while his background in barbering means he is equally comfortable with precise clipper work and shorter men’s cuts.
Joe also works as an educator and mentor, teaching men’s hairdressing and grooming and hairdressers understand how to develop careers in editorial, fashion, advertising and session work.
